Define What You Manage
A park, factory and product line may each require a different data scope. First define the management question, then determine which information must be collected and maintained.
Keep Sources and Calculations Traceable
Retain sources for meter readings, business-system data, manual records and other inputs. Document the boundaries, methods and conditions used in calculations.
Connect Platform Work with Independent Review
Platforms support data preparation, analysis and reporting. External verification or certification still requires the relevant review process; system outputs are not independent verification conclusions.
Separate Organizational and Product Carbon Records
Organizational accounting covers an entity's emissions during a reporting period. Product carbon footprints cover product-related emissions within selected lifecycle boundaries. Some raw data can be shared, but accounting objects, allocation methods and boundaries must be defined separately.
Establish Data Quality Checks
Record dates, units and responsible parties for activity data, and sources, applicability and versions for emission factors. Document estimates, missing-data treatments and subsequent updates so changes can be explained and calculations reviewed.
